MALLORCA TODAY - Coastal cleaning operations under corruption investigation

Police have opened a new line of investigation in the ongoing cases of corruption that emanated from the Balearics tourism ministry during the time that the former Unió Mallorquina party was in charge of the ministry. Following the three-year sentence handed down to ex-tourism minister Francesc Buils, police are examining the arrangements for coastal cleaning operations that were transferred from the environment ministry to the tourism ministry. Police suspect that a national company engaged in the work paid irregular commissions to the party.

(Comment: When the current tourism ministry said that it had no money to continue these cleaning operations, there was considerable surprise expressed as to why it was that the tourism ministry was even involved in such operations.)
