MALLORCA TODAY - Sa Pobla passes its burka ban

The town hall in Sa Pobla has approved the local ban on the wearing of the burka and instituted fines that could amount to up to 3,000 euros for regular infractions of the ban. Opposition parties, which either abstained or voted with the Partido Popular administration of mayor Biel Serra, criticised the ban on various grounds, e.g. that the mayor was seeking for himself "notoriety" and that the mayor had made the move to ban the burka without consultation. Concern was also expressed that it was unnecessary and could lead to social division in the town.
