MALLORCA TODAY - First waste imports to start in January

The Council of Mallorca will permit the first imports of waste into Mallorca at the start of January 2013, a report having established the import legality. The first waste will come from Catalonia and it is said that the import will not be great as it is in the form of a test.

MALLORCA TODAY - Europe gives waste imports the go-ahead

The European Commission has reported in favour of the import of solid combustible waste to Mallorca and of its burning at Son Reus where the incinerator complies with a European directive.

MALLORCA TODAY - Alcúdia now approves import of waste

In an extraordinary turnaround from the situation a month ago when all local parties in Alcúdia declared opposition to the import of waste through Alcúdia's port for subsequent incineration at the Son Reus plant, the Partido Popular administration has won a vote dismissing an opposition motion to prevent the import. The PP has accused the opposition of creating alarm among tourists by distributing leaflets regarding the waste import, a point denied by former mayor Llompart of the CxI.

Meanwhile, it has also been pointed out that the previous Alcúdia administration permitted the import of similar waste that had been sent directly to the cement factory in Lloseta; this type of waste is apparently valued by cement producers because of its high calorific value.

MALLORCA TODAY - Opposition from mayors and hotels to waste import

The Council of Mallorca faces growing opposition from the mayors of Alcúdia and Bunyola as well as from the hoteliers federation and tourist businesses to the import of waste for incineration at Son Reus. The grounds for opposition range from the use of Alcúdia port, local contamination and a poor image for tourism.
