Proving that hot sun and dry conditions aren't necessary for a forest fire, the first major incident of 2012 occurred yesterday in the mountains in the area between Deià and Sóller. Two hectares of forest were affected and tackling the fire was made that much more difficult because of the high winds.

Meanwhile, on the mainland four fires have been raging in the Pyrenees, three of them still active. 870 hectares of forest land have been destroyed, 200 people evacuated in an area near to Lleida.
